The Importance of DR as a Metric for Choosing a Donor

Domain Rating (DR) is a proprietary metric from Ahrefs that reflects the “authority” of a resource’s link profile on a 100-point scale. The main drawback of this metric is its focus on quantitative characteristics and the “weight” of donors, without a deep analysis of their relevance, content quality, or the presence of real traffic. In other words, the metric can easily be gamed to simulate a site’s authority.

We won’t deny the need to check it, but DR isn’t something to be trusted unconditionally. Because with a relatively small budget, it can be fairly easily “boosted.”

Common schemes for artificially inflating DR

  • PBN rings: creating a network of sites that link to one another in a circular or cross-linking pattern
  • 301 redirects: redirecting from high-DR domains to the target resource
  • Using Expired Domains: drops on which a single page with a link to the target site is placed
  • Link Farms: sites that sell guest posts en masse
  • Web 2.0 and directories: mass creation of profiles on free platforms and registration in directories

Summary

The DR metric serves only as an indirect benchmark and can easily be artificially inflated, so a high number doesn’t guarantee real authority in the eyes of search engines. To avoid investing in “empty shells,” it’s necessary to always check the donor domain comprehensively. At the very least, check for the presence of organic traffic and the naturalness of its link connections.
